Conservatism: WTF?

Ok, the headline is rather more inflammatory and less informative than I'd like, and I apologize for that; but the fact is that I'm starting to get a bit frustrated. Seriously, what the hell is going on with these people?

First, let me back up a bit. It's not conservatism in general I have problems with; believe it or not, I even have a few friends that are conservative (and they're lying when they say I keep them locked in the attic and feed them paint chips). My problem is with the particular brand of conservatism I'm seeing more and more lately. You know the type: the type that ignores facts, science, truth... pretty much anything that doesn't validate their predefined worldview.

As an example, I hate the idea of climate change. Seriously hate it. I have a four year old son that is going to have to deal with that mess, and you have no idea how much I wish that weren't true. The problem is that the science is pointing that way, and selfishly refuses to change directions no matter what I might want. The only rational conclusion is to accept the science; I didn't argue with my doctor when he told me I had heart problems, either.

Apparently, though, there are a lot of people that don't feel the same way. People that would rather see the country and without hyperbole the human race fall rather than face the possibility that their worldview might be wrong. They'd rather see our economy collapse than give credit to President Obama, and rather see people die than dip a toe into what they consider to be socialist waters.

When asked why, they give you citations from obviously biased sources like Fox "news" and various self-confessed right-wing conservative blogs.

Not trying to be insulting here, seriously; it's what I, and others, are seeing. Can someone please explain this to me? At this point I'll consider any theory, no matter how outlandish. I'm hoping that people from all over the political spectrum will chime in here, and maybe speak a bit more freely without any specific topic.
